Acute Neck or Back Pain: What to do?

  • Don’t just freeze. Keep moving, gently, slowly. Here is a short little video with 4 simple stretches for low back pain, or neck pain.

  • Ice for 15 minutes 3-5x day if you feel your pain is caused by inflamed tissues. Heat if you feel your pain is due to spasm.

  • For neck pain, lie on your back and place a rolled up hand towel in the curve of your neck (you can freeze a hand towel or heat it depending on whether your neck is in spasm (heat) or inflamed (ice), do this for 15 minutes at a time and/or place two tennis balls in an athletic sock and then place the balls under the occipital ridge of your skull, you can just be still or roll your head gently from side to side.

  • For back pain, lie on your back and place your lower legs on a chair seat or an inflatable ball or place a bolster or two pillows on the floor and drape your legs over the bolster. You can use ice (inflamed) or heat (spasm) while lying there for 15-20 minutes.

  • Natural Pain Relievers: Phytoprofen by Thorne (general pain and inflammation), White Willow Forte by Biogenesis, Joint Ease by Vital Nutrients. There is always Advil (for inflammatory conditions) and Tylenol (for pain and joint pain). Essential oil of Peppermint Oil applied directly (avoid mucous membranes!!) to neck and or lower back can be very helpful. Tiger Balm for headaches (rub on the temples or along the occipital ridge). Salonpas (available on Amazon or at most local drug stores).
